New Greeting Cards Stock

I've finally got around to updating some new greeting card stock on Creations in a Teapot.

There are a mix of designs painted by both my brother, Jacob, and I....

In seems that Jacob has been more prolific than me in recent days....his five designs are on the second row.

Album 'From a Warm Room' Now Available

Hope you all had a great Christmas! No doubt there'll be a few sore heads today.....

My sister Mary Myfanwy's début album, 'From a Warm Room', is now available on our website, Creations in a Teapot .

There are five track segments available to play.

I'd appreciate people having a listen and leaving me a comment - it'll be passed onto the muso herself :)

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! May all your dreams come true and your stockings be full of good presents!

Don't forget to take time out to meditate on the true meaning of Christmas.....

Be safe! :)

Billabong Pirates

These Aussie animals are off searching for buried treasure....or perhaps some early Christmas presents!

This painting closely follows my 'Billabong' series. These works depict the everyday adventures of an assortment of Australian animals.

Painted in ink, gouache and watercolour it's available for purchase at an unusually sharp price (I'm feeling very festive!). If you're interested please email me directly for further details.

Mary Myfanwy's launch 'From a Warm Room'

Christmas is so close I can almost hear the sound of boots down the chimney!

Just a little reminder for the locals of the South West who're still looking for arty gifts, my final festival before Christmas will be this Sunday at the Bridgetown River Park market (providing the weather is good) 8 - 12pm.

Sunday will also see the launch of my sister, Mary Myfanwy's début album 'From a Warm Room', at the Bridgetown Cidery from 1:30 - 3pm. All are welcome :)

The album contains 10 original songs beautifully recorded and arranged by a local studio.

Hope you like the album artwork - can't think who painted it....:)

The Tree of Many Faces....

...And so ends a hectic weekend of markets.

Travelling between two festivals I managed to clock up over 1200km! During that time I dodged one kangaroo and a couple of rabbits while obliterating a population of suicidal bugs and butterflies.

Saturday was an enjoyable day at Denmark market with several thousand people turning out to support the stallholders. Arriving back in Bridgetown at 9pm last night I was up at 2am this morning for an enjoyable market day in Fremantle.

During these two days I managed to knock out a bit of drawing and painting. Denmark and Freo weaved their hippy spell and made me doodle out this rather detailed drawing. Entwined in this drawing are roughly nine personified heads. I say roughly because the more you look at this scene the more faces seem to appear....what is in that Denmark/Freo water??

I’m back in Denmark in the New Year - January 4th. Make sure you pencil the date in your diary

SCBWI Magazine Illustration + Denmark Market

A little drawing I created for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators magazine - November issue.

Just a little reminder for anyone interested - I'm heading down to Denmark, WA, tomorrow to take part in their Saturday Christmas market in the park. If you're in the area then come on down for a chat :)

Bring on the Warm Weather!

Tomorrow will see the second last Bridgetown River Park market before Christmas.

I'll be there with my art. After the gloomy weather today I'm hoping tomorrow's conditions will resemble this watercolour's climate a little more....

Mary Myfanwy - Début Album

Exciting news as my sister, Mary Myfanwy, prepares to launch her début album 'From a Warm Room'.

This is a fantastic ten song collection with all material written and performed by Mary. Even as her brother I'm blown away by her voice and writing technique! She's seriously good!

An example of her writing is this extract from the song 'Butterfly':

'The dying sun drips into your room, shadows have come, the dark winds croon for you. Where have you gone? Now that you've grown? You have your wings - unfurling to fly, they beat a warning to you....'

Crazy stuff!

Her music blends mellow indie with soft pop and blues.

Unfortunately there are no tracks uploaded on Youtube yet, the only song available is Earth Dreams, a home recording created over a year ago.

But if you're keen to purchase an album they're $20 each plus postage and packaging. Please contact me directly and I can process the order :)

If you're able to come to the launch - see poster - please feel welcome, we'd love to see you at the Bridgetown Cidery on December 22nd.

Up to the Perth Royal Show 2014

As the Bridgetown Agricultural Show draws to a close I'm honoured to be representing Bridgetown at the Perth Royal Show 2014 for the 8th time in a row! Crazy!

First time I got the privilege was at the tender age of fifteen. On attending the awards for the first time the artists and sponsors treated me with a little patronisation.... Who wouldn't to a kid at an adult's State art award. Happily I took home second place!

I didn't receive another award there until 2012 where I took first place for a landscape in oils - the day before my 21st :)

For 2014 I have a small watercolour and gouache that will be representing Bridgy... It's a personal favourite of mine as it depicts a scene I've seen my entire life - a sunset through a set of pear trees that are the final survivors of an old orchard from yesteryear.

Boyanup Markets this Sunday

A busy artist is a happy artist - or so I like to think as I busily research and draw for many hours on my second book contract with Walker publishers.

And I still find time to paint a little bit of selfish art...mostly at markets and festivals. Such will be the case this coming Sunday where I'll be visiting the Boyanup Markets for their Christmas special event.

While there I'll be working on this painting that's I've been occasionally slapping paint on since August.

See you there!

Sunset on Hill - Oil Painting

Only a couple of weeks before my local Ag Show makes it's annual visit. I like to support the art section of this show as the entry count is always small.

My contribution this year is an oil painting with a slightly epic sunset. Unfortunately my camera hasn't done justice to the colours (that's what happens when you invest in a small compact camera!) but this is the general appearance.

Framed in a dark, smoky blue frame with a thin gold band this painting is for sale. For more info please email me directly.

Christmas Greeting Cards

Don't blink! If you do you'll miss an entire year and Christmas will be here again....!

So while Christmas lurks cunningly behind a dark corner take a quick visit to our family website, Creations in a Teapot, and check out the Christmas card range. All designs are created by my brother Jacob and I. This excludes three stunning designs created by the late Wendy Hearn, from my Mum's book Seasons and Seasonings in a Teapot.

Greeting cards can be sent all over the world. Please msg me directly for a postage & packaging quote.

Couple of events.....

A fair serving of illustration work has restricted me from Facebook for a while.

The weekend won't be getting any quieter with two festivals over the next couple of days.

Firstly the Spring Gala at Jalbrook, Balingup. This event is the chance to meet with gardening guru, Neville Passmore, who'll be giving a talk and book signing. For more info please go here.

The following day will see me at the Children's Fiesta in Fremantle as part of their music festival. More info here.

Definitely worth a day out for either of these events. So see you there!!! :)

Zig Zag Festival

Off to the Zig Zag Festival in Kalamunda tomorrow (see my events page).

If you haven't highlighted this festival in your calender then definitely make amends. Plenty of arts, crafts, live music, food plus activities for kids.

I'll be drawing free portraits there, so make sure you seek my stall out. See you there!

'Are you feeling stressed? Then take time out to be swallowed in by a meditative seascape!!'

Painted while on a working holiday. Nothing better than chilling out at sunset by the beach (or in this case, unfortunately an estuary).

Original for sale, please message me directly for further details :)

The Floating Boy

The painting of the floating boy is complete.

The intensity of the midnight sky is the crowing achievement in this work.

I applied Prussian Blue directly from the tube to create depth with thin layers of coloured ink to increase the intensity.

The original is available for purchase, please contact me directly at for further details :)

Zig Zag Arts Festival 2013

The Zig Zag Festival is upon us again.

Taking place in Kalamunda, Perth, this enjoyable event promises craft stalls, live music, kids activities and good food.

As this year's theme is 'Middle Earth' I'll be there in my hobbit garb selling my greeting cards and providing free portraits to customers.

So make the effort to join in. Come and get your beautiful facial features abused on paper by me and my pencil :)

Sunday, October 27th, 11 - 7pm. More information here.

It's been a while since I've posted on here.

I've been busily undertaking an intense few weeks of painting and, happy to say, completing two books well within the contract's deadline.

I'm really content with the final artwork. Looking forward to showing some of the illustrations nearer the release date of the books (2014).

As I posted the artwork off yesterday I celebrated its departure by painting a picture just for the hell of it.

What's the story behind it, dunno, maybe the little guy on the watering is lazily levitating the boy after the latter gave him cheek.

This is the original sketch....

'Flight' is now complete.

With slabs of gouche heavily covering several original atmospheric concepts I finally settled on a subtle evening glow.

Due to several technical issues I'm experiencing with my website, Creations in a Teapot, this image is available as a greeting card or archival print (29.7 x 21cm) directly from me. Contact me directly  at to have orders processed manually.

The original is also available for purchase. If interested please contact me directly for more details :)

No One Put's Baby in the Corner

My sister, Mary Myfanwy, has just finished recording a collection of her own songs to put onto a CD.

She's in the midst of deciding album artwork. As an incredibly awesome brother ;) I've been helping her with ideas.

One of my ideas - that she wasn't at all keen on - was this little sketch. I'd imagine a good title for this piece would be 'No one put's Baby in the corner...'

Relaxation - Still Life

The coffee themed still life - now renamed 'Relaxation' - is complete.

I've enjoyed using gouache in a similar way to oil - although there's  been several complications that I'm going to have to research and solve through practice.......nothing like a challenge!

Greeting cards will be available on Creations in a Teapot as soon as a minor issue regarding product upload has been resolved....yet another challenge ;)

Flight to the Dawn

Still in early stages of development this painting follows a similar theme to 'Dream Flying' .

I must point out that this little guy is no relation to Peter Pan ;)

The Show Goes On

The book launch of a biography recording the history of the Bridgetown's Repertory club is taking place today.

As a favour to the club I provided the cover art for the book. It as a simple enough project as my contribution was limited to the sketch of the building leaving the designers to add footprints and parchment effects.

The book, written by Gwen Read (with assistance from other people including my mum, Sarah Evans), has been a work of love for the past decade. It's nice to see her hard work has finally paid off!

Sunset Through Pear Trees

Further experimentation with gouache was the reason behind this small painting, 'Sunset Through Pear Trees'.

Majority of this work is watercolour with white gouache giving the  opaque body.

Measuring 36 x 17cm this painting is available for purchase. Please email me directly for further details at

Ode to Coffee

As I'm waiting on confirmation for a number of illustrations I submitted I thought I'd paint a still one does.

This was a good opportunity to try using gouache to its full potential.....both like watercolour and oil.

Although incomplete I've already decided on a name - "Ode to Coffee"!

Pirate Day Image

The Fremantle Pirate Day Festival is fast approaching - September 22nd.

I'll be donning the garb of a pirate and painting pirate pictures from my art stall....

This'll be the picture I'll be messing with on the day. I deleted the smouldering cigar from the kangaroo's mouth after thinking that a children's picture promoting smoking might be frowned on. And if anyone asks I'll inform them that the possum is getting tidily on lemonade........!

Snow White....Cover Exercise

This piece was painted as a basic 'cover' art exercise about a year ago.

It's nothing brilliant but I like to show it during children's workshops as an example of 'fun learning'. Taking a well know story and creating a cover is great preliminary training for illustrators (especially if you alter a cute character like Snow White to resemble a used car salesperson!) :)

Kevin Rudd

I try and not bring politics into my art because - oddly enough - my art doesn't reflect that area of life!

But after being bombarded with the election over the weekend I can't help but upload this drawing of a little dude we won't be seeing for a while.....

Christmas Card Design

When I first began designing greeting cards for our family business, Creations in a Teapot, I experimented with some small scale oil paintings.

This is one of the designs I toyed with several years ago. However, it never made it into the greeting card range.

In preparation for this painting I managed to convince my sister to pose in full winter gear (during the middle of summer) with one of the family dogs.

I would like to eventually reattempt this image in watercolour to add to the Christmas range......

Ye Old Windmill

Ye Old Windmill!

One of my many sky studies. I find it helps to anchor a sky study with a basic landscape. In this sketch I might of been thinking about Jack and Jill - the two windmills on the Downs in the UK....

Canning Library Workshop

Wow! This photos depicts me looking as if I know what I'm doing!

I believe at this point in the workshop I was explaining to the kids that it's fine to leave mistakes in a painting i.e. sketchy pencil marks. The reason: Because it shows the viewer the painting's journey...

I'm happy to say I heard one young lad was happily leaving in the 'mistakes' because (as he told his Mum) 'that's the way artists learn!'

Good on him! :)

(Photo kindly borrowed from the City of Canning Library)

Medieval Artist

Another painting I was working on during the Balingup Medieval Carnival was 'The Medieval Artist'. Still far from finished, I've gone for a cool feel....after all, the medieval times didn't exactly have central heating! So dominant washes of burn umber, cobalt blue, winsor blue and light red will help sombre the mood.

Please keep an open mind when viewing this painting....there is no historical accuracy. Purely whimsical!!!

Cliff Top Treehouse

Yesterday saw the close of a hectic week. Beginning with several workshops through several city libraries for Children's Book Week (teaching over 500 children in total) and finishing with the Balingup Medieval Carnival.

The carnival was a success again this year - apart from the rain on Sunday. During the event I managed to finalisethe  'Cliff Top Treehouse' painting. Although the colour combination is different to my original idea the overall result is happily harmonious.

Greeting cards and archival prints are available at Creations in a Teapot

Medieval Mouse Artist - pencil sketch

There's a great sense of freedom in stretching the artistic wings of creativity and create a jumble of messy lines that eventually come together as a picture.

In this sketch I had know idea what I wanted..... But on establishing the painting mouse the rest of the picture seemed to grow around it!

There's something about adding unnecessary detail without reason. A sense of playing 'god' in your own little world!

'Medieval Masterpieces' Poster

Had fun completing this poster for the Balingup Medieval Carnival.

I'm performing 'Medieval Masterpieces' as a street theatre gig where I offer free portraits (with a twist!).

My favourite character is the pervy king.....! :)

Path of Progress

I like to encourage kids in my workshops to hold onto the artwork they create so - as the years advance - they can see their path of progress.

The paintings below demonstrate my path of progress. I'm guessing the top left hand drawing was painted in the period of 1999 - 2002, the top right hand painting is 2007 and the bottom artwork is 2013.

I think it's great I can compare my work's growth. It shows my development in my technical skill and that hours of hard work are finally paying off!!!

Library Door Panel (1)

This painting is for one of the door panels in the Bridgetown Library commission.

I personally feel sorry for the little bobtail lizard that is clinging desperately to the branch!

Library Artwork - main panel

This painting is for the main panel in the Bridgetown Library commission I recently undertook.

I tried to show as many Western Australian animals that are readily seen in the area surrounding the library.

My favourite character, the red-tail cockatoo, was a last minuet addition. He wasn't in the original sketch (view earlier post). See if you can spot him ;)

Colin Barnett - Library Artwork

The official opening of the Bridgetown Library went well yesterday.

I attended the event as the only artist amidst politicians, councillors and representatives from surrounding shires.

Had a quick chat and photos with WA premier, Colin Barnett, alongside my library artwork.

Pinched this photo from his Instagram account. Would greatly appreciate anyone following this link to leave a comment on his page :)

Library Art - Sketch

The Bridgetown library was officially opened today by WA premier, Colin Barnett.

Happily the artwork - that the local Bridgetown council commissioned me to paint for the children's section in the library earlier this year - had been sent back from the printers in time to adorn a window and two door panels.

I was given much creative freedom in this project with a brief that asked for 'Aussie animals and books' to be included. I greatly enjoyed the whole process to complete this project.

This is the initial sketch for the artwork.

Friday, 19 July 2013

Been a while since I last an excuse I blame work. I've been religiously working on the finishing and revising illustrations for a title released through Walker Books.

Last weekend also saw another successful Balingup's 'Telling Tales' event. With an increase in children participating in writing, illustration and storytelling workshops - run by children's book writers and illustrators. The vibe was really positive.

I ran several illustration workshops, admiring much of the work produced by some extremely talented kids. Unfortunately it is also sad to see many kids imaginations are limited - possible due to rare participation in creativity...

During 'Telling Tales' I also found time to give art demonstrations throughout the day. This was mainly concentrated into this piece, 'Gnomesville'. Painted in watercolour and gouache over ink.

Greeting cards are available at Creations in a Teapot.

The original is also for sale, please contact me directly for further details :)

Sunday, 7 July 2013

This painting began life as a demonstration piece for potential publishers. I based it loosely on Rumpelstiltskin.

However, as with a lot of work it ended up in the 'finish it one day' pile. But unlike most pieces I did actually complete it.....(after a year)!

It's doubtful whether I'll show this to a publisher though. It looks like a Disney fairy story gone slightly demonic!

'Sharing Secrets' - the sketch

This is the compositional sketch for a painting titled 'Sharing Secrets'.

As you can see I've gone all out on detail!!!

I'm aiming for a moody, atmospheric painting that conveys a feeling of place....

Balingup - Telling Tales 2013

Telling Tales in Balingup is upon us again.

This annual holiday event is a chance for kids, 4 - 13 years old, to partake in workshops run by children's book illustrators and authors. Storytelling and bookmaking is also available.

I'll be there with my illustrating cap on and hope to see as many kids attending as possible!

This is a great weekend activity for families. Plenty of coffee shops to keep the adults entertained too!

For more information visit the Balingup Events page here.

Sibling rivalry....

This small drawing was created as a demonstration piece for publishers. If there's one thing a publisher wants to see from a potential illustrator is their figurative skills....especially of children!

This scene displays several different emotions. The bossy sister and her smug friend, the annoyed/embarrassed brother and his scared mates. One mate bravely trying to pour oil on troubled waters. It's a scene for the viewer to interpret....possibly it's the sisters birthday party and she's insisting the boys don't alienate themselves from the girls.....who knows...!! :)

I applied a splash of watercolour to accentuate the expressions of the two siblings.

Mary Myfanwy - Earth Dreams

'Earth Dreams' is a book recently released by UK author, Christine Day.

She commissioned my sister, Mary Myfanwy, to write and perform a song to accompany the promotional video clip.

Mary wrote a soulful song that shared the same title as the book.

This can now be heard on Youtube. As her brother I'm very proud of little sis! She has a deep, rich voice that is surprising for her age (18) and slight build. Hopefully she'll release a few more songs on Youtube in the near future :)

Botanical Research

I've been spending the last week busily researching for a possible book project I'll be undertaking soon....this project is not yet a dead cert...

This sketchbook extract is an example of the research I'm undertaking. I'm painting as many different plants as possible to store up in case I need them as reference in the near future.

The variances of green in one leaf is incredible! This was frustratingly apparent in the ornamental holly leaf that seems to hold more variations in green than most....there was smoky blue, sap green, dark green, magenta and at lease fifty further colours! Okay...that was a slight exaggeration.....:)

Some of the deciduous trees are still holding their autumn leaves so I've been pinching a few to record as well...

Water Pump in Garden

This is the second, more intimate garden painting in the recent commission I completed.

The customer liked my initial sketch for this composition as it included the water pump adorning the wine barrel in the corner. Apparently there was a personal history connected to the pump so I took extra care in its depiction!

Monday, 24 June 2013

Garden Glow

Recently completed a commission for a customer that depicts her garden in the springtime.

There were two paintings in this project. This is the more atmospheric of the two showing the late afternoon sun lighting up the garden at the front of the house.

An enjoyable project although it took a while to complete as I wanted to maintain the watercolour's freshness and achieved this by painting in short, energetic stints.

Dream Flying

'Dream Flying' is now complete.

Depicting four children on a whimsical flight through their dreams....

This image holds a huge amount of paint on it! I thickly slapped several different types of blue and red to try and achieve a velvety hue. I brought in a heavy amount of white gouache for highlights and colour pencil for detailed highlights.

Greeting cards and archival prints are available from Creations in a Teapot.

The original is also available for purchase, please contact me directly for details :)

Man's Best Friend

A little dedication to my Old Man and his love for Grey Fergie tractors. Although he's had plenty of opportunities to update his tractor to some flashy model his dedication to this sixty-something year old motor remains true.
My painting is titled 'Man's Best Friend'. Painted in watercolour and ink.
Greeting cards can be purchased at Creations in a Teapot.
